Cleveland High School's Girls Lacrosse

Affiliations

Cleveland High School's girls lacrosse team is part of a club program sponsored by the Oregon Girls Lacrosse Association. While lacrosse is not yet an OSAA-sanctioned sport in Oregon, it is the fastest growing sport in the U.S. for both men and women and has seen dramatic growth in the Pacific Northwest for youth, high school, college and post-collegiate levels of play.

Cleveland's
Team

Cleveland fielded its first JV Girl's Lacrosse team in the spring of 2006 with 25 players and one coach. For the spring 2007 season, the program grew to include a Varsity and a JV team with a coaching staff of three. As a club program, Cleveland draws players from its own student body as well as players from nearby high schools without lacrosse programs. Cleveland plays in the Portland Interscholastic League division which includes teams from Lincoln, Wilson, Grant, OES and St. Mary's.

Girls Game vs. Boys Game

The girl's game is quite different from the boy's game: it is a non-contact sport that is based on running and passing. The only equipment required for field play is a stick (a ‘crosse') and eyewear.

The Season

The practice/playing season is from February into May, concluded by a State Championship.

Who Plays Lacrosse?

Lacrosse is an excellent crossover sport for girls who play soccer or basketball. It also attracts girls who have never played an organized sport before. NO EXPERIENCE IS REQUIRED, just an interest in learning the game and having fun.
